James practises mainly in crime, in all areas of criminal work. He is also experienced in immigration law, personal injury, professional negligence, administrative law / judicial review, mental health, family and employment law.

He has acted for the former DHSS, the Treasury Solicitor, the Home Office, the Crown Prosecution Service, HM Customs & Excise. He undertakes prosecution and defence work and is an experienced Crown Court trial advocate.

Notable Cases

  • Regina v MA, Maidstone Crown Court (2012): Confiscation proceedings; dispersal of proceeds of sale of sole remaining asset by funding and repaying indebtedness of Defendant’s company; disclosure of financial transactions concerning existence of recoverable benefit.
  • Regina v IYM, Isleworth Crown Court (2011): Assisting unlawful entry; appeal against Terminating Ruling as to the basis for determining the existence of an offence under immigration law as constituting the underlying breach required under the offence.
  • • Regina v KS, Harrow Crown Court (2010): Robbery appeal; main evidence against defendant was that of identification over many minutes and involving particular evidential aspects but evidential aspects in circumstances of stress and fear.
  • Regina v DS, Croydon Crown Court (2010): Breach of order; whether jurisdiction to deal with breach, concerning a statutory alternative offence, where guilty plea to the index summary offence was entered in the Crown Court.
