Jeremy’s practice encompasses immigration and asylum, criminal defence, coroners’ inquests and professional regulation, with a strong focus on human rights.

Much of his work has had a high media profile, particularly in the area of civil liberties and its implications have been referred to in parliament as prompting primary legislation – DPP v Dziurzynski, Times 08-Jul-02, [2002] EWHC 1380; HO circular 34/2005.

In suitable cases Jeremy will undertake direct access work directly for members of the public.

Civil Barrister

Jeremy’s civil liberties experience includes: (i) defending the first criminal prosecution of the new offences (re animal research organizations) under s 145/6 Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 at the Old Bailey; (ii) defending the second proceedings charging the same offences (a Very High Cost Case at Birmingham CC- contract manager agreed exemption from local counsel rules due to expertise); and (iii) various proceedings relating to the activities of activists around the country; civil actions against the police and defending High Court actions and Committal applications brought by claimants including Monsanto, Huntingdon Life Sciences, John Lewis and Circus King.

Immigration and Public Law Barrister

In Immigration and Asylum, Jeremy has represented at all levels from the FTT through to the Court of Appeal, including the Administrative Court. He has a wide knowledge of this area of law although his criminal and civil liberties background brings a particular expertise in deportation and unlawful detention cases.

Inquests and Inquiries Barrister

Jeremy is a member of our inquests and inquiries team, has worked on inquests with international and civil liberties dimensions, deaths in custody and other article 2 inquests. He sits as a coroner in West London and Oxford.
