Crime Barrister

Michael has recently represented defendants accused of robberies, including armed robberies; cases involving vulnerable witnesses including video-link cases; cases involving dishonesty, theft, deception and in particular breach of trust allegations; burglary and aggravated burglary offences; murder (including allegations of multiple murders); fraud, including complex multi-million pound frauds and frauds by government officials; conspiracies to manufacture and produce sophisticated false identity documents; sexual and gross indecency offences; rape, including multiple rape and buggery allegations including those within the family; kidnapping, false imprisonment and blackmail; road traffic, excess alcohol and related offences; violent disorder, affray and other offences against public order; firearms, explosives, terrorist and associated offences; allegations of violence including extreme violence, racially aggravated violence and violence against young children within the family. Also, violence allegedly by senior teaching staff against pupils; drug offences including allegations of major drug conspiracies.

Michael has also been concerned in criminal cases involving analysis of scientific and forensic data and has successfully opposed HMRC in civil confiscation proceedings.

Notable Cases

  • Regina v S: A conspiracy to supply class ‘A’ drugs concerning 232 kilos of pure cocaine having a street value exceeding £60,000,000.
  • Regina v DR: Leading Counsel at the Central Criminal Court to secure the acquittal of the defendant who was on trial for conspiracy to commit armed robberies.
  • Regina v S: A case involving extreme child pornography, firearm and explosive offences.
  • Regina v F: Allegation of seven murders and an attempted murder. Defendant accused of killing members of four generations of a family.
  • Regina v C: A complex covert interception case involving multiple defendants.
  • Regina v F: A £35,000,000 VAT fraud with 30,000 pages and complex confiscation proceedings.
  • Regina v B: Criminal property and money laundering case. Successful defence in civil confiscation proceedings following application by HMRC to seize defendants assets following his acquittal secured at trial.
  • Regina v M: Senior teaching staff alleged to have sexually abused male pupils over a long period.
  • Regina v C: Major class ‘A’ drug case involving covert interceptions and international law. Defendant’s vehicle bugged whilst on a ferry at sea.
  • Regina v M: Defendant charged with numerous counts of rape of a young family member. Successful appeal to the Court of Appeal.
  • Regina v B & L: Conspiracy to manufacture extremely sophisticated false passports and identity documents.
  • Regina v C: Nineteen counts of rape and buggery of defendant’s brothers and sisters. Defence based on false memory syndrome.
  • Regina v W: A major drugs and firearms case and now a leading Court of Appeal authority on sentencing for firearms offences.
  • Regins v A: Case involving extreme violence. Defendant digging victims’ eyes out with a hairbrush. Mental Health Act case.
  • Regina v S: Extremely violent racist attack in a park with a baseball bat causing life-changing injuries to the young victim.
