Civil Barrister

Nicholas is regularly instructed to advise on all aspects of employment law, including negotiating and approving termination agreements.

Crime Barrister

Nicholas has particular expertise in handling heavyweight criminal cases where there are substantial issues in relation to disclosure and public interest immunity. He specialises in cases that require analysing complex evidence, particularly telephone evidence, cell site evidence, banking and financial records.

Nicholas has represented many clients charged with serious sexual and violent offences, which require expert cross-examination of vulnerable and emotional witnesses. Nicholas has a reputation for presenting his client’s cases with clarity and force. He has a reputation for tenacity, and is known for his legal and tactical acumen.

Nicholas has successfully defended numerous clients charged with the most serious sexual offences, including securing acquittals for defendants accused of committing rape and serious sexual assaults in the course of their employment.

Nicholas is regularly instructed to represent defendants in high value confiscation proceedings and in civil forfeiture.

Nicholas is a member of the CPS Specialist Rape Panel and is a Grade 3 Prosecutor. His recent prosecution cases have included cases of historic sex abuse, rape, fraud, serious violence and car-ringing.

Notable Cases

  • LKS (the Curry Poisoning Case): In a case which attracted considerable media attention LKS was charged with murdering her former lover and attempting to murder his new partner, as well as administering poison to the deceased on an earlier occasion. Other murder cases include murder by arson, honour killing and street stabbings.
  • Wood: Baby shaking, rendering a 3 1/2 month old baby blind, deaf and severely brain-damaged.
  • Catal & Others: Leading authority on basis of plea in heavy criminal cases – AG’s Ref 108,109, 110 of 2008 [2008] EWCACrim852.
  • Shepherd: Child cruelty – multiple injuries to 3-month-old baby.
  • Jama: D accused of gang rape whilst being on the run from having shot PC Sharon Beshinivsky.
  • Abraham: Defendant charged with rape of his daughter. Conviction quashed in the Court of Appeal, acquitted in retrial.
  • Machado [2006] EWCA Crim 837; (2006) 170 J.P. 400: Leading authority on the scope of S.98 CJA 2003 (bad character).
  • Lakhvir Kaur Singh [2011] 2 Cr. App. R. (S.) 19: Tariff on murder.
  • Blackburn [2012] 2 Cr. App. R. (S.) 44; [2012]: Leading authority on definition of benefit in confiscation cases.
  • Sheidu [2014] EWCA Crim 1671; [2014] Crim. L.R. 827: Valuation of benefit – foreign property.
