Law Friends Society Immigration Law Conference London – 24th October 2019

News

Three members of Chambers’ immigration team joined the Law Friends Society’s Immigration Conference in London as trainers on 24th October 2019.

Pierre Georget started the morning off with a lecture on the use of medical evidence in asylum and human rights claim, which was very well received. Including a focus on the recent Supreme Court case of KV, in which colleague Charlotte Bayati represented the appellant, Pierre’s talk also covered an overview of the Istanbul Protocol and the Experts Practice Direction used in the First-Tier and Upper Tribunals.

Dr Anton van Dellen continued the Goldsmith Chambers immigration presence with a very topical lecture on what has become known as the “Hamid” cases and the reach of disciplinary tribunals in the immigration courts. Anton was able to provide expert guidance having represented the appellant in Vay Sui IP v Solicitors Regulation Authority in the High Court on a direct access basis. In this case, the solicitor involved appealed against a decision of the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal (“SDT”) to strike him off the roll of solicitors and to order him to pay the costs of and incidental to the tribunal proceedings, fixed in the sum of £10,000.

Closing the conference, Anthony Metzer QC, Head of Chambers, updated delegates on the case of Banger following the reported determination from the Upper Tribunal addressing the Court of Justice of the EU’s earlier judgment. The position for unmarried partners using the Surinder Singh route has at last been rectified as have been the statutory appeal rights of Extended Family Members. Anthony was able to take delegates through these developments and latest updates having represented Ms Banger in the Upper Tribunal and the CJEU and leading junior colleague, Sanaz Saifolahi.

The feedback received was widely positive and the immigration team would wish to formally thank Steve Kennedy at the Law Friends Society for his stellar launch and coordination of the conference.
