Ian became a member of Goldsmith Chambers upon the successful completion of his Common Law pupillage in October 2019. He accepts instructions in all areas of Chambers’ practice, with a particular focus on civil, crime and immigration matters.

Prior to joining Goldsmith Chambers, Ian was a County Court Advocate for several years before becoming the In-House Advocate for a nationwide provider of advocacy services. During this time, Ian became the Head of the Landlord and Tenant Litigation Department, an advocacy trainer and a seminar lecturer.

Since joining Goldsmith Chambers, Ian has expanded upon his civil litigation background by growing a strong practice defending and prosecuting criminal cases, including conducting trial lists for the CPS on the East of England Circuit. Under the mentorship of Joseph Plowright and Samina Iqbal, Ian has been developing his immigration practice, appearing in bail applications in the First-Tier Tribunal and undertaking instructions in judicial review, substantive appeals and unlawful detention.

Crime Barrister

Ian regularly appears in the Crown, Magistrates’ and Youth Court. He frequently defends in a wide range of hearings from first appearances to trials and sentencing. Throughout his practice, Ian has represented clients for a broad spectrum of offences including violence, dishonesty, drugs, public order, fraud, theft, sexual offences, domestic violence and driving offences.

Ian also prosecutes Magistrate’s Court trial lists on behalf of the CPS in the East of England Circuit. He has completed specialist training in relation to vulnerable witnesses and youth advocacy.

Ian accepts instructions on a Legal Aid and Private basis.

Notable cases

R v A – Isleworth Crown Court – November 2019. Successfully obtained post-conviction bail for a convict charged with theft of property worth more than £500,000.

R v R – Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court – September 2019. Crown offered no evidence to charges of speeding and a S.172 offence after Ian highlighted clear deficiencies in the Crown’s evidence.

R v L – Horsham Magistrates’ Court – July 2019. Defendant found not guilty following a failure to stop trial.

R v L – Oxford Magistrates’ Court – July 2019. Defendant found not guilty following a harassment trial.

R v J – Luton Magistrates’ Court – May 2019. Defendant found not guilty of two counts of offering to supply Class A and Class B.

Civil Barrister

Ian has over 5 years’ experience practicing in the field of Civil litigation since being called to the bar. He has successfully represented clients in a number of claims, including:

Notable Cases

Jakubowski v Cirencester Civil Engineering Limited – Central London High Court – August 2019. Represented the Claimant in a Multi-Track costs and case management hearing.

Horan v EUI Limited – Guildford County Court – July 2019. Successfully represented the Claimant in a claim for damages that arose from a Road Traffic Accident which had occurred on a Roundabout directly outside the Court Building.

Wilson v Tompkins – Clerkenwell & Shoreditch County Court – July 2019. Successfully obtained the full rent arrears claimed by a private landlord and defeated a counterclaim for disrepair.

Holden v London Borough of Hillingdon – Central London High Court – June 2019. Successful appeal against the District Judge’s decision to dismiss the Claimant’s claim. The decision was overturned on appeal resulting in a substantial award of damages.

Eames & Masters v NV Transport Ltd & PMP Forward Limited – Southampton Employment Tribunal – April 2019. Complex TUPE transfer case in which Ian successfully represented two former dock workers in their claim for Unlawful Dismissal on a pro-bono basis for Havant Citizen’s Advice Bureau. The Claimants received a total award of over £30,000.
