Nicholas is a committed advocate, providing advice and representation in immigration, asylum, and public law. He routinely advises and represents clients challenging Home Office and judicial decision-making and delay. He has advised and represented numerous clients experiencing difficult and distressing circumstances, including separation from children and serious health problems. He is able to discuss sensitive matters compassionately and to advise on complex legal issues in a way that is comprehensive and accessible. He is also an authorised litigator and public access barrister.
In addition to pro bono work for the Ukraine Advice Project, the Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RaMFEL), and the Free Representation Unit (FRU) in the past, Nicholas has continuously supported the work of Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) since 2012. Prior to undertaking pupillage, he was a volunteer caseworker and helped to establish their Prison Project. Since then, he has frequently represented their clients and been seconded as in-house counsel on three occasions (Locum Supervising Caseworker (2021); Legal Manager of the Rwanda Project (2022); and Legal Manager of the Family Team (2024)). They nominated him for Advocate’s Young Pro Bono Barrister award in 2018.

Immigration Barrister
Nicholas’ immigration practice comprises family and private life; asylum and protection; and challenging deportation, as well as Points-based System routes; settlement and citizenship; the EU Settlement Scheme; and visitor visas. This includes advice, drafting, and representation in applications and appeals, as well as seeking administrative and judicial review. He has a particular interest in cases concerning children’s rights and immigration detention.
Nicholas has a proven track-record of establishing fresh human rights and protection claims under the Immigration Rules on behalf of clients who have had applications refused and appeals dismissed; often multiple times and whilst subject to deportation proceedings. He is also skilled at identifying arguable grounds for seeking permission to appeal.
Public Law Barrister
Nicholas is keen to expand his public law practice, having gained significant experience and skill at the pre-action and permission stages of judicial review. This regularly includes challenging adverse decisions pursuant to paragraph 353 of the Immigration Rules; and certification of human rights and protection claims, as well as Home Office delay and failure to implement appeal determinations.
Nicholas is keen to carry forward the knowledge that he has gained through his litigation work by pursuing public law challenges against decision-making and delay in such areas as unlawful detention; accommodation and support; the National Referral Mechanism; and electronic tagging.
