Brenda Efurhievwe secures Pegasus Scholarship to assist refugees in Poland

News

Brenda Efurhievwe was awarded the prestigious Pegasus Scholarship as part of the 2025 cohort.

The Pegasus Scholarship scheme makes it possible for gifted young lawyers to learn about the practical working of legal systems in other countries, and to form enduring links with lawyers in other jurisdictions.

Due to her background as a Polish national with a Magister Prawa degree, Brenda opted to secure a self-arranged placement at Stowarzyszenie Interwencji Prawnej in Warsaw. Stowarzyszenie Interwencji Prawnej (the Association for Legal Intervention) is a Polish NGO renowned for its work supporting refugees and migrants in Poland. The Association provides free legal assistance and, where necessary, represents asylums seekers before Polish courts and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

During her Pegasus placement Brenda will support the Association with:

  • legal aid to refugees and migrants in Poland;
  • work related to challenging pushbacks at the Polish–Belarusian border;
  • proceedings before the ECtHR, including applications for interim measures (Rule 39);
  • drafting official submissions to the European Commission (e.g., infringement proceedings);
  • preparing or supporting submissions to UN bodies or EU institutions;
  • drafting and reviewing submissions related to the execution of ECtHR judgments; and
  • legal research concerning EU law, ECtHR case law, and international human rights law.

Brenda will be on a sabbatical from Chambers during her placement, returning in late October 2025.
