Georgia 2025: English Law Forum

News

The Georgian Bar Association warmly welcomed Anthony Metzer KC, David Giles, and Sarah Memmi in Tbilisi, Georgia at the English Law Forum, arranged by LexLaw Solicitors, London, to discuss judicial independence, jurisdictional and enforcement issues arising out of arbitration and well as money-laundering, fraud and corruption.

The event, hosted by the Georgian Bar Association at their headquarters on 6 May 2025, celebrated the strong ties between the two jurisdictions, and aimed to share aspects of proceedings in England and Wales which make it a global leading jurisdiction.

The event was attended by over 100 Georgian lawyers, the Chair of the Association, the Georgian Minister of Justice, the BritishAmbassador to Georgia and other dignitaries including, the President of the Law Society of England and Wales attending remotely.

Anthony Metzer KC (who also attended at the inaugural event last year) has been sitting in apart-time judicial capacity for over 20 years. He spoke about the necessity of impartiality and the approach judges must take to preparing for trial, being thorough and as to how to assess the evidence before reaching a fair and just judgment. He also gave his top tips for advising clients on how to choose the governing law – the suitability for a joint venture, the type of claim, level of experience of the court, and what is realistically achievable.

David Giles discussed enforceability of judgments and asset tracing.

Sarah Memmi assisted in presenting the issue of corruption within arbitration proceedings, how it might arise, a comparison between the French and the UK approach – two leaders in arbitration – and how to deal with corruption as the practising lawyer in a case.
