Law Friends Society Criminal Law Conference – 25th October 2019

News

Two members of Chambers’ crime team joined the Law Friends Society Crime Conference in London as trainers on 25th October 2019.

Oliver Newman spoke on the recent important changes to the PACE Codes of Practice, an essential area for high-street criminal legal aid firms. The lecture covered the inclusion of body worn video cameras now being used as a medium for recording police interviews, and a person’s rights in relation to this. The concerning new changes to the codified role of appropriate adults was discussed in detail as well. This contribution was well received, with many of the audience members wishing to discuss the matter further with Oliver Newman following his presentation.

Sara Wyeth later lectured on the topic of recent magistrates’, youth, and Crown Court updates over the previous year and coming up in the near future. This presentation focused on important changes to the Sentencing Guidelines, including the newly codified guidelines on offences of arson, and also an in-depth look at the new offence of assault on emergency workers. In addition to this, Sara Wyeth also took a look at the technology available to advocates to assist them day-to-day in the courtroom. This lecture was a highly informative look into the cutting-edge changes to the criminal legal system.

The lectures were received very positively and the criminal team would wish to formally thank Steve Kennedy at the Law Friends Society for the excellent event that he organised and professionally coordinated throughout the day.
