Tower of London’s Ceremony of the Keys

Goldsmith Chambers were honoured to be welcomed to an event at the Tower of London on Monday 20th May to witness the historic and prestigious “Ceremony of the Keys”.

In recognition of their support for the Infantry Football Club, Goldsmith Chambers and MACS Legal Services were invited for a guided tour of HM Tower of London by Yeoman Warder Shaun Huggins. From Goldsmith Chambers, members, staff, pupils, a naval pupil and a door tenant attended and were escorted, out of hours, through hundreds of years of the Tower’s bloody history, including the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula – the burial site of Anne Boleyn, before drinks at the Yeoman Warders’ private club – the Keys Bar.

Following drinks, attendees met the Tower’s ever-watchful ravens before witnessing the Ceremony of the Keys, the traditional locking-up ritual performed by members of the Tower of London Guard. The Ceremony has taken place at 9:53pm every single night without fail since the 14th Century and is considered the oldest military ceremony in the world.

Everyone from Goldsmith Chambers extend their considerable gratitude and thanks to Captain Jimmy Blair, Colin McEwen of MACS Legal Services and the Yeoman Yeomen Warders of HM Tower of London for their hospitality and the opportunity to witness this impressive spectacle. It was a wonderful evening, which was much enjoyed by all.
